Plant names

Glossary Item Box

When you purchase WinTree Nursery Manager, you can choose whether you wish to use the TSD plant name file or not. This is a plant name file containing some 30,000 names, with match codes built up according to the IMAG system. This chapter assumes that you are using this plant name file. Even if you are not using it, this chapter contains some very useful information. We recommend that you build up your own plant name file in the way we describe here.

When working with plant names, it is important to know that each plant in the TSD plant name file is linked to a unique plant sequence number.

This number determines the plant group to which the plant belongs and makes sure that the sorting is done in the correct manner in your reports!

For example   Latin name:

Arisarum proboscideum

Match code:

ARPROBOS

This plant has as sequence number: 710870

Based on this sequence number, this plant belongs in the category of perennials: Arisarum

The match code is built up in the following way:

The first two letters of the Latin name form the first two letters of the match code. The first letter of the second name forms the third letter of the match code. The rest of the match code is completed using the letters of the third name up till a total of eight letters.

For example:

Latin name: Acer  campestre 'Elsrijk'

                          AC    C    ELSRI

If a Latin name consists of two words, after the first two letters of the first word, the rest of the match code is completed by the second name up till a total of eight letters. In the case of the Acer campestre then, the match code is ACCAMPES.

ShowAdding a plant name

You will often be working with an existing list of plant names but a situation can occur where you will need to add new plant names.

This is the way to do this:

Go to Main menu--> Stock items--> Maintain plant names and check to see whether the plant name is already present. If this is not the case, you can add a new name using [Add]. Because the use of plant sequence numbers is extremely important, we have to generate a new sequence number for the plant name that has been added. It is important that this number is chosen in such a way that, in a report or on a screen, the plant will be sorted so that it is placed in the category it belongs to. A perennial should not be sorted among the trees, of course.

Before you choose a sequence number for your plant, make sure that you know where in the list (in other words, between which plants) the new plant must be inserted. For this reason, go to a few similar plants in the list and note the sequence number that these plants have been assigned. The diagram below shows clearly how this procedure works. A Buxus sempervirens ‘Greencarpet’ has been added.

The new plant must be placed between the plants indicated in the diagram. The sequence numbers increase by increments of 10. In this way, you can insert a maximum of nine plants between all the plants defined. The genus number is the same for all members of the same species.

ShowDeleting a plant name

When you wish to delete a plant name, you can only do this if the data is no longer in use. If the data has already been used, for example, for an order or an invoice, then you will not be able to delete the plant name.

You delete a plant name by clicking on [Delete] in the Plant Name window and answering with ‘Yes’ when asked if you are sure to do this.
